Looking for great Prog Psych pressings? Are there alternatives to high priced "original" LPs?

Yes. For example:  Lables Middle Earth (MDLS suffix), Neon (NE suffix), Young Blood (SSYB suffix), Island (ILP(S) suffix) & Regal Zonophone ((S)LRZ suffix)

These are all Australian or New Zealand pressings, which have the same perfect sound quality as the UK pressings, or, looking at the Middle-Earth pressings, a much higher quality standard in sound and vinyl.

They are much much rarer on the market as well, but collectors have neglected this fact so far.

So if you see one......make your move.

(Photos were shot by me. They are shown for information purpose only!)

Wooden O. -  A Handful Of Pleasant Delites - Astor SPLP 1312 (Org. Middle Earth MDLS 301)Wooden O.

Arcadium - Breathe A While - Astor SPLP 1313 (Org. Middle Earth MDLS 302)

Writing On The Wall - The Power Of The Picts - Astor SPLP 1314 (Org. Middle Earth MDLS 303)

Tam White - Tam White - Astor SPLP 1343 (Org. Middle Earth MDLS 304)

All four of the Middle Earth LPs were released in Australia by Astor as they had a contract with Pye. The Cover Art (incl. flipback cover) was mainly the same:

The amazing "Earthed"-Sampler from the Middle Earth label did not get a release on Astor
Earthed (or Starters) - UK - Middle-Earth MDLS 20

On the other hand it has two songs more (A6 and B6) than the Swedish LP "Coloured Rain" ILP-800 and the (very same) Canadian LP "Traffic Reaping" WIS-4700)...

Traffic - Traffic - Festival SFL-932,780 (Org. Pink Island ILPS 9061. This is equal to the "Mr. Fantasy" - UK LP)...was released on "pink i" label as well: SIL-932,780...

Traffic - Last Exit - Festival SFL-933,362 (UK Org. Pink Island ILPS 9097)

On the cover they are described as Festival SFL-933,589 with the reference to a monaural pressing FL-33,589. Running Man - The Running Man - NZ RCA Victor AGBS-0736 and AGBS-0737 (Org. RCA Neon NE 11)

There is another New Zealand pressing taken from the famous RCA Neon label: The band TONTON MACOUTE. The self titled pressing is showing RCA Victor AGBS-0519 and AGBS-0520 (Org. RCA Neon NE 4).

Don't know if there are any further NZ Neon pressings, maybe they've released only the more prog/jazz related LPs, maybe more...who knows?

If you are still looking for sometimes high priced first "original" pressings only, why not having a look at other opportunities? For example: German pressings.
They are often less expensive. They have glossy front and back covers (lamination) and the sound quality is equivalent in most cases. They are first pressings too, because they were made under license at the same time here (mostly). If it was significantly later it's commonly called a repress, since the same master was used, even if it is the first press in that country. If it went out of print in the original country, it is commonly called a reissue.
Here are examples of UK-, US- and some other groups. All pictures shown are from my personal LP collection and were taken by myself. All groups (labels) shown on my site simply represent my taste regarding the 60s and 70s prog, psych and (simply) rock music. The collection will never be finished.....

Affinity - Affinity - Vertigo 6360 004 (UK Org.)

The (American) Amboy Dukes - Journey To The Center Of The Mind - London SHA-U 116 (London SHT 8378) ...and Vogue LDVS 17155. Same Year 1968. Which came first? I don't know...but I guess this one, for the band is only called "The Amboy Dukes" as in the US (without "American", as there was an UK group of the same name and "American" was added on Europe LPs to distinguish them from the UK act)

Anno Domini - On This New Day - Polydor 2310 096 (UK Org. Deram SMLR 1085)

Art - Supernatural Fairy Tales - Island 88 395 ET - Stereo 1972 (UK Pink Island ILP 967 - mono)

Artwoods - Art Gallery - Decca Mfa ND 576 (Decca LK 4830)

The German pressing is mono. If you do not want to spend a fortune, but you want a UK mono copy, that is the one to look for: (Has the same ARL!, but getting rarer each day. Decca Eclipse ECM 2025)

Beatles....

....it does not make much sense to show all the LP's here. There are so many sites on the i-net showing most of the output of all countries. And there are just too many and so many different pressings, besides I am happy with the blue ones on EMI from the end sixties (only laminated covers and catalouge numbers starting with 1C 062) and some on ODEON that I have.  ... so I'm just showing here one but my favourite record:

Beatles - The White Album - Apple SMO 2051 (UK Org. PCS 7067/8) - first German press...or an affordable alternative as well: 1 C 192-04 173 (fully laminated, top loader, numbered, thick vinyl as well, sec. German press). Both German versions are stereo. No mono copies were released in Germany. (UK org. can be seen here: http://mi-me.de/and-beyond-orig.html)

Jefferson Airplane - Takes Off - RCA LSP 3584

It is a common fact, that after the initial pressing of this LP, RCA deleted the song “Runnin’ ‘Round This World”, for it contained the line “The nights I’ve spent with you have been fantastic trips” which the label interpreted as a drug reference. They also disliked the lines “I gotta get in, you know where” (later: "You shot your door, now, it ain't fair") and “Don’t tell me you want money” (later: "Don't tell me it's so funny") in “Let Me In” and also had problems with the lyrics “Flowers that sway as you lay under me” (later: "Flowers that sway as you stay here by me") from “Run Around”, all probably for their sexual reference. So they forced the group to record the both songs with alternate lyric lines (for “Let Me In” and “Run Around” ) for all other subsequent pressings of the album. BUT: Did you know, that the following German pressing from 1966 has the original lines of the two above mentioned songs and only misses the song "Runnin' 'Round This World"? (No German mono copies, as far as I know). Dead wax reads TPRS-0173 and TPRS-0174, the backcover does not have the ''RE'' caption, still the songs are uncensored. It is like the so called US "second version".

Leaf Hound - Leaf Hound - Telefunken SLE 14604-P (Decca SKLR 5094 "Growers Of Mushrooms")...

God knows why the German pressing omitted 2 songs. The band toured Germany with a certain success in 1970. But at that time of releasing the Telefunken LP (in late 1970, too!), the band did no longer exist....BUT: The Telefunken LP is the only chance to get it in a high quality sound standard (besides an UK original from 1971, of course). The several reissues (like the US one on Discwasher in 1978)......are not of the same standard. (The same applies imo to the ex-Yugoslavian Helidon pressing from around 1973). As an good alternative, grab the See For Miles CD SEECD 403 (stating "Taken from the original master tapes") or the Repertoire CD REPUK 1079. Brillant sound to my ears! (Unfortunately neither took the chance to produce a good re-release LP at that time).....well, 'till now (2014):

Repertoire REP 2208

...but if you don't have up to 4000 UK Pounds (or much more after the last sales) to spend for one of the approx. 500 UK originals...take the other original from Germany....

Germany saw also the release of the only single from Leaf Hound at that time
Drowned My Life In Fear - It's Gonna Get Better - Telefunken U 56 154

It is odd, that Leaf Hound did not appear on any Various Artists Compilation at that time. So I thought, but I was wrong. First of all, Leaf Hound's so called predecessor, Black Cat Bones, appeared on the following LPs:
Decca Nova Sampler S 16 666-P (1970) with "Please Tell Me Baby"Super Blues World - Decca DS3115/1-2 (1974) with "Death Valley Blues" and "Save My Love" ...and on this strange LP from the UK recorded to commemorate the launch of the vessel Queen Elisabeth II with the superbe non LP track "The Warmth Of The Day": Scepter SALR 1216Leaf Hound did in fact get a release on this very very strange compilation called
"Neues aus dem Schlagerschuppen" - Decca Sonderauflage SFGLP 78160 (1971)
with their song "It's Gonna Get Better" (and alongside German and international pop songs).and.... on another strange compilation which differs only in one song:                                                            Spitzenschlager - Musikbox '72 Decca Sonderauflage für den deutschen Schallplattenclub  Decca 28300-2
Offers the song "It's Gonna Get Better" as well....and this beautiful picture of the band:

Two other German compilations have to be noted for the sole appearance of Human Beast with "Mystic Man"
on The World Of Rock - Decca S 16 696-P (1970)and the sole appearance (in Germany, see above) of Writing On The Wall with "Ladybird" and Arcadium with "Poor Lady" on Progressive Music Vogue Mode Serie CDMDINT 9785 (1970)
